PROFILE
Born in 1969 in Gujo Hachiman, Gifu Prefecture, he spent his childhood immersed in nature and collecting Jomon-era stone tools. His favorite subjects were science and art/crafts. He initially aspired to become “an inventor of a famous household” or an archaeologist, and eventually realized that a designer’s role could combine both perspectives.
1988: Enrolled in the Department of Art, University of Tsukuba, majoring in product design.
1992: Joined Fujitsu Ltd.’s Corporate Design & Development Center, where he worked on product design and early-stage design planning for mobile phones and other electronic devices.
1999: Left Fujitsu and moved to Milan to work as a freelance product designer. Collaborated with Italian companies, craftsmen, and fellow designers. His works were exhibited at Fuori Salone and Salone Satellite during Milan Design Week.
2002: Returned to Japan and established Ifuji Design Studio in Gifu City. He collaborated with local industries—such as developing LED lighting based on traditional Gifu lanterns—and exhibited at events including Tokyo Designer’s Week, Design Tide, and 100% Design in London.
2007: Appointed Associate Professor in the Department of Information Design, College of Informatics, Daido University (formerly Daido Institute of Technology). He served on committees for regional events such as Nagoya Design Week and Gifu-focused GifuRec. Through manufacturing, he promoted proposals for new lifestyle ideas.
2018: Became Professor in the Department of Media and Product Design, Faculty of Creative Engineering, Kagawa University, and relocated to Takamatsu City. Drawing on his extensive experience and network, he now proposes new forms of design by engaging with traditional crafts and the IT industry from both academic and design perspectives.
